First Lines Fridays #1

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

The real story isn’t half as pretty as the one you’ve heard. […] Because that’s what the story’s really about: getting out of paying your debts. That’s not how they tell it, but I knew. My father was a moneylender, you see.

And the book is…

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik!

I have to admit I took a few liberties with the ‘first lines’ and left out a whole paragraph but I just liked the way this sounded. And I promise you, you’ll like the whole book even more. Spinning Silver is the perfect book for anyone who’s into fairy tales, fae and complex female characters (so everybody, right?). If you’re still not convinced, check out my review!

How important are first lines to you? Would this opening line make you pick up Spinning Silver? Let’s discuss down below in the comments!
