Book Review // The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

When it comes to super hyped-up books, people usually either hate them or love them. Since this book is as hyped-up as possible, but also has a lot of negative reviews, I expected to hate this. Surprisingly, I didn’t.

I found quite a few awesome cover reveals last month but for some reason I didn’t post this even though it was already finished. The human brain works in mysterious ways. Whatever, it’s here now and I had the chance to add a few cover reveals.

Book Review // King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.

Rating: 🌵🌵 ½

After reading the Six of Crows duology, I expected this to be better. But I completely discarded the fact that the Grisha Verse is the basis of King of Scars. And that was my doom.

Book Haul // January 2019

This month was a good month. Maybe not the best reading month, but a good book-buying month for sure. I spent a lot of money bur I also got a lot of books on Netgalley.

Physical Copies

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black: I caved, guys. This book is so hyped up and with the sequel coming out, I couldn’t escape it. I already read it but I haven’t written a review yet because I’m a lazy piece of shit.

Book Review // Fireside Chat with a Grammar Nazi Serial Killer by Ryan Suvaal

Seventeen gruesome murders were reported across the United States, within a span of six months. Ohio, Minnesota, Arkansas and several other states were hit. There was one clear connection among victims, they were all book authors. While media was decorating the murders with sensationalist stories, and law enforcement was playing catch-up, the homicidal maniac remained elusive and secretive. Things got very interesting, however, when one day she decided to appear on an internet talk show for an honest fireside chat. Her reason for being on this show was not a quest for fame, but something much more disturbing.

Rating: 🌵🌵🌵

I am just a run-of-the-mill reader who has been very frustrated reading unedited manuscripts all her life.

Well… that and a serial killer.

Fan Art Friday // Vicious by V.E. Schwab

This was bound to happen, wasn’t it? After all, Vicious is my favourite novel ever and Vengeful was just as good. I want nothing more than a third book in the Villains series. I don’t care if I’ll have to wait 5 years or more, I just want it to happen. But still, the waiting time is going to be one hell of a bitch. To ease the pain a bit (or make it worse, who knows) let’s admire the beautiful art other Schwablins have created.

The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab

Victoria Schwab’s first novel is going to be rereleased with a new cover and bonus content in March 2019! As this happens to be one of the few V.E. Schwab books that I haven’t read yet, I’m super excited.

Also, this is an amazing glow-up. Just compare the old cover to the new one:
